About the Relationship Between Color and Curiosity
For thousands of years, color has fascinated and captivated philosophers and religious scholars, artists and scientists, storytellers and writers alike. Every culture and tradition in history has used the language and metaphors of colors to explain the world in which we live.
Even the rainbow itself was a component in many myths, including several places in the Jewish Tanakh, the Christian New Testament, and ancient Nordic Prose Edda. Plato even explained definitively that Iris (the name of the Greek goddess of the rainbow) is the daughter of Thaumas, god of the sea, whose name means wonder – a synonym for curiosity.
In this lecture, Ezra Butler will take you down several rabbit holes of curiosity he has already traversed in his two years of focusing on the history and language of colors for his website and newsletter called "Colorphilia."
He will share several cases where he found etymology and sources through investigation of primary sources that might change our understanding of word origins and wonder whether there is actually a difference compared to the accepted explanation(s) we have today.

Ezra Butler
Researcher, writer, artist, educator
Ezra received his bachelor's degree in Computer Science at Yeshiva University in New York, but was much more interested in courses in academic biblical studies, sociology, anthropology, and history, so he studied for a master's degree in "Jewish History" at Bar-Ilan University, which is essentially the history of religions. During the summers throughout his master's degree studies, he studied Latin and ancient Greek at the Hebrew University. After working in the high-tech world and in the creative field for about a decade and a half, he returned to art at the beginning of the COVID lockdown in New York. And about two years ago when he was living in Chicago, Ezra founded Colorphilia to connect art with research. About two months ago, Ezra left the United States to establish a new project concerning the advancement of human curiosity
